Yankees To Hire Kevin Towers
Yankees To Hire Kevin Towers
In a less earth shattering move than most, the Yankees are going to hire Kevin Towers, formerly the San Diego Padres GM in some capacity going into the 2010 season. Towers and Cashman have always been very good friends, so this can be seen as Cashman bringing in another great mind to help him make decisions in the future.
Towers was the Padres GM for 14 years (beginning in 1995) before he was fired last October. You may remember some controversy in the firing as Towers claimed he was never given a reason for his termination. During his time with the Padres, the team was 1,107-1,160 and reached the postseason 4 times; having their most success in 1998 when they reaches the World Series (vs. The Yankees - we won, by the way) for the first time in Padres history.
Maybe this is a sign that the Yankees are attempting to keep up a pretty strict budget as Towers comes from a Padres club that really never spends a lot in payroll (just over $37MM last season), however, it is worth mentioning, but really not something that will have much of an impact going forward.
