7/29 in Yankee History

2007: Former Yankee outfielder Bill Robinson dies at the age of 64. A quality hitter unappreciated during his three seasons in New York (partly because fans were hoping his arrival on the scene before the 1967 campaign would cushion the blow of the impending retirement of Mickey Mantle, and also because the Bombers had sent fan favourite Clete Boyer to Atlanta for him), Robinson would go on to a distinguished career in the NL, principally with the Pirates.

1978: At the Stadium, the Yankees pummel the Twins 7-3 before 46,711 fans on hand for Oldtimers Day. Billy Martin " As it happens, it won't take that long. Martin will again take the helm of the Yankees during the 1979 season only to get fired again.

1952: In Chicago‚ the first place Yankees‚ having lost 6 of their last 7 games‚ look like they'll drop another as the White Sox build a 7-0 lead through 6 innings behind Billy Pierce. New York score 3 in the 7th to cut the lead‚ then score 3 in the 9th off Harry Dorish. Dorish loads the bases for Mantle‚ who takes him downtown with his 2nd grand slam in three days. Allie Reynolds then shuts down the Sox to give New York a 10-6 win.

1930: Babe Ruth contributes a pair of singles and a walk‚ but Lou Gehrig supplies the heavy artillery in New York's 12-3 win over the host A's. After Ruth opens the 4th with a single‚ Gehrig hits his 30th homer to left-center field. In the 5th‚ Babe walks and Gehrig triples to center; a Ruth single in the 7th is followed by a Gehrig smash over the right field wall. Lou adds a double in the 2nd and his 6 RBIs make it easy for Hank Johnson to pick up the win. Gehrig's hitting moves him into the AL lead at .390‚ as Al Simmons (.386) is hitless.

1929: The lively ball is threatening the popularity of the National pastime in the opinion of the majority of major and minor league baseball managers and officials polled by the United News (as noted in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette). Ten major league managers favor a return to the dead ball‚ four like the present ball‚ one doesn't care what kind of ball is used‚ and another failed to express an opinion. John P. McGraw and Wilbert Robinson are the leaders of the group who would return to the dead ball. Yankee skipper Miller Huggins steadfastly sticks by the lively ball‚ but admits it might aid the game to help the pitcher. "We've got to play this game the ways the fans want it played‚" Huggins said. "They build the stadiums and they pay the Ruths and Gehrigs. And they like the home runs. "

Huggins_29.jpg

President E.B. Barnard of the American League thinks the lively ball is being exaggerated as a menace to baseball‚ while President John Heydler of the National League maintains that there is no difference in the baseballs used in the senior circuit during the past 10 years

1928: The Indians score 8 in the first and 9 in the 2nd in a 24-6 romp over the Yankees at Cleveland. Eventual loser George Pipgras makes a quick exit, allowing 5 hits and getting no outs in the first. Johnny Hodapp of the Indians becomes the first AL player to get 2 hits in an inning twice in a game when he strokes a pair of singles in both the 2nd and 6th innings. Hodapp and Joe Sewell each have 5 of the Tribe's  27 hits as Joe Shaute coasts home with the win. The 24 runs is the most ever scored against the Yankees in a single contest. The sputtering Yanks have seen their lead over the A's shrink from 11 1/2 games to 6 in one week.

This singular effort will never again be matched against the Yankees‚ though Boston's Don McMahon will get credit for beating them twice in one day in relief in 1966. The Red Sox‚ losers of two to the Tigers today‚ remain in second place, a 1/2 game behind the New Yorkers.

1903: Cy Young (below) goes the distance for Boston in a 15-14 loss to the Highlanders. New York had been shut out in their two previous matches in the series. New York starter Jack Chesbro is lifted in the 6th for Harry Howell‚ while Willie Keeler has 4 hits to lead the Highlander offense. The game lasts 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Though largely unnoticed at the time, a rookie named Ron Guidry makes his debut in the second game, though, and notches Jim Rice as his first Major League strikeout victim. The red-letter day -

1928: In the opening game of a doubleheader with the Tigers, Yankee outfielder Bob Meusel hits for the cycle, and becomes the only man in AL history thus far to do so three times in his career. (Only Babe Herman has equaled the mark in the NL.)

Detroit rookie righthander Vic Sorrell and the Yankees' Waite Hoyt are tied at 1-1 after 11. 12 hits and 2 walks in the 12th‚ all off Sorrell‚ score 11 New York runs to set an MLB record for the biggest extra-inning storm ever for the frame (the same two combined for 11 runs in the 12th inning on May 14‚ 1923: NY-8‚ Det-3‚ which is a record for 2 teams). Detroit take the nitecap‚ outslugging New York‚ 13-10. Harry Heilmann hits a grand slam‚ in the 2nd‚ and adds a triple and single to drive in 8 runs. Earl Whitehill is the winner‚ though reliever Elam Vangilder belts a homer.

1962: One of the stranger incidents in the history of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry occurs after the Bombers thrash Boston 13-3 at the Stadium. Following the game, pitcher Gene Conley and utility infielder Pumpsie Green of the Red Sox mysteriously disappear - they leave the team bus in traffic to find a rest room and fail to return. Conley decides he wants to fly to Israel‚ and takes a cab to Idlewild (now JFK) airport‚ but is refused a ticket because he does not have a visa. Conley was the loser in the game‚ walking in 2 of the 8 earned runs allowed ikn 2 2/3 innings of work. Green did not play. Jim Bouton is the winner‚ blanking the Hubmen for 6 innings.

1936: Umpire Bill Summers (below) is forced out of the game after he is hit in the groin by a pop bottle thrown from an unruly crowd of 50‚000 at Comiskey Park. The throng are upset with an out call at first on Ray Radcliff in the 8th inning of the second game of a doubleheader with the Yankees. Judge Landis‚ on hand to watch the game‚ offers a $5‚000 reward over the PA system for the culprit‚ but only draws more boos. The deluge of pop bottles finally abates when Jimmy Dykes pleads through a megaphone from the pitcher's mound. The Yanks sweep the pair from the Sox‚ 12-3 and 11-8 (in 11 innings). Lou Gehrig hits his 29th with two aboard to start New York's scoring in the opener. Joe DiMaggio and Tony Lazzeri add round trippers to make it easy for Johnny Broaca. Sugar Cain is the losing pitcher. In the nitecap‚ Gehrig adds another homer‚ while Zeke Bonura homers and drives home 4 runs for the Sox. DiMaggio has one hit‚ a triple. The sweep increases New York's lead to 9 1/2 games. Landis will state tomorrow that he is considering a ruling that all beverages at ballparks henceforth be served in  paper cups.

Chicago win the opener‚ 5-4‚ despite collecting just 5 hits off Hank Johnson. One of the hits is a hiomer by Lu Blue in the 3rd inning‚ his first and only homer in his 2 seasons in a Chicago uniform. But Lu will collect 127 walks this year‚ a club mark not topped until another first baseman, Frank 'Big Hurt' Thomas‚ does it in 1991.

The players then take out their frustrations on the Browns, beating them 11-6. Ruth bangs two homers‚ Pipp adds another‚ and Schang chips in with a two-run triple.
