Spring Training Day Wrap-up (2/22/10)

Today was a very busy day at the Yankees Spring Training facility.  CC Sabathia threw his first sliders of 2010, AJ Burnett had a 30 pitch throwing session with Jorge Posada, the Yankees signed a veteran right hander (Chan Ho Park), and to cap it all off, young catching prospect, Jesus Montero, hit a towering home run off the center field score board as part of his offensive show.  Here is a rundown of all the major stories of the day:

Yankees prospect Jesus Montero has been showing off at Spring Training

  • Week 2 of Spring Training began and more players showed up.  Check out today's photos to see Brett Gardner, Randy Winn, Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher, Greg Golson, Marcus Thames and more Yankees in action.  The only two players that have not shown up in photos of the team workouts are Alex Rodriguez (who was said to be at the facility earlier this month), and Mark Teixeira.  I would expect both of them to arrive tomorrow considering that the entire outfield worked out today, it's natural to assume that infield workouts will begin soon.
  • If you've been at work and actually working today - you may not have heard that the Yankees announced a one year deal with veteran right hander Chan Ho Park late last night.  The reliever from South Korea most recently played for the Phillies, where he put up a 4.43 ERA over 83.1 IP (9 starts).  Yankees fans may remember seeing him in the World Series when he went 3.1 innings and did not allow a run.  This morning, Park stated that it was his decision to choose the Yankees over the Chicago Cubs (who were also in the running for his services), citing that he would like to play for a championship caliber team.  Park will make $1.2MM
  • Damaso Marte has become the center of attention in some talks as the realization that he is the only reliable left hander in the Yankees bullpen sets in (reliable is a loose term based on his hit or miss history with the Yankees - pun intended).  Another option is young lefty reliever Wilkin De La Rosa, who missed his throwing session today with some elbow discomfort.  De La Rosa is recovering from an elbow injury that he endured last season.
  • AJ Burnett threw his first bullpen of the Spring this morning and Jorge Posada caught him.  After the session, Burnett admitted that the controversy about who should catch him was primarily his fault.   Burnett went on to say he was eager to work with Posada for a full season and that he would like Posada to catch every game and bullpen that Burnett throws during Spring Training.  Said Burnett: “I never questioned Jorge. Never would, never did. I questioned myself, and then everybody thought I questioned Jorge. He’s caught in this league for a long time, and I can do nothing but learn from him, so I’m looking forward to it.”
  • Joe Girardi was interviewed about the pitching battle that's heating up between Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, etc.  He mentioned that he envisioned Hughes and Chamberlain on the big league club in some capacity, saying specifically that he was not expecting to send either of them to the AAA rotation.  Chad Jennings of the LoHud Yankees Blog makes an interesting point about the Chan Ho Park signing in relation to Hughes and Chamberlain's statuses.  Jennings argues that the Park signing has more of an impact on Gaudin and Mitre, who are similar to Park in that they can work as long relievers or spot starters.  I would expect that barring some major event, it will either be Hughes or Chamberlain as the number 5 starter (the loser of that battle will go to the 8th inning role), Park will start the season in the bullpen and Gaudin and Mitre will begin 2010 leading the SWB Yankees rotation - that is, unless Girardi feels that our young pen needs more of a veteran, "innings eater" presence.
  • To cap off the day's workouts, the Yankees got a look at catching (more offensive than defensive) phenom Jesus Montero at the plate.  Montero did not disappoint viewers who were treated to one of the longest home runs you can hit at George M Steinbrenner field.  Montero's blast apparently hit the "M" on top of the center field scoreboard where the name "George M. Steinbrenner" is displayed (see photo below - doesn't give you an idea of the actual distance, but seeing as how the parameters of this field match Yankee Stadium, you can imagine that ball would be well in the black seats at the Old House).  Montero said he wasn't trying to hit home runs today, but rather get comfortable with his swing - I'd say he's comfortable alright.  Can't wait to see the show this kid puts on when he arrives in the Big Leagues

That about does it for today.  Things should be picking up steadily over the next week as this is the final week of 2010 before we get to see the Yankees take the field for their first Spring Training game next Wednesday.

Before I go, I'll leave you with a quote of the day coming from our own Beeeebzy (who wrote this article on Chan Ho Park), when asked if the Yankees should go after Joe Mauer (if he doesn't sign an extension with the Twins):

"Why go for Joseph when you can take Jesus?"
