Yanks Sign Chan Ho Park; Damon press conference info; other tidbits

Yankees right hander Javier Vazquez throws during Spring Training in Tampa

The Yankees have signed veteran right handed pitcher Chan Ho Park to a one year deal to work out of the bullpen, reports say on Yankees.com.  The 36 year old veteran from South Korea pitched 83.1 innings (45 games; 7 starts) for the Philles in 2009 to the tune of a 4.43 ERA.

Park will likely start the 2010 season on the Yankees big league roster and serve as a veteran presence for a bullpen that is fairly young outside of Mariano Rivera.  Park's strength is that he can eat up innings and serve as a very effective long-guy out of the pen.  In the World Series, you may remember Park appearing 4 times (3.1 IP) during which he did not allow a run.

Here are a couple more headlines out of Tampa:

  • New addition, Javier Vazquez threw off the mound yesterday, which turned out to be earlier than expected.  Vazquez was supposed to begin his program on Wednesday but was moved up to Sunday.  Posada caught 30 fastballs and changeups from Vazquez and said he was impressed by the session.  Vazuqez was the only pitcher to throw on Sunday that did not throw breaking balls - but that is no cause for concern.  Seeing that Sabathia threw on Saturday and Vazquez on Sunday, could this mean Girardi is preparing Vazquez to pitch second in the Yankees rotation?
  • CC Sabathia took a day off on Sunday to see the Orlando Magic play the Cleveland Cavs.  In case you didn't already know - CC still has strong ties with LeBron James and he is also a big NBA fan.  CC was praised in 2009 for inviting his new teammates to Orlando Magic games.
  • With Phil Coke now in Detroit, the Yankees only have one proven lefty out of the bullpen going into the 2010 season: Damaso MarteYankees' prospect Wilkin De La Rosa's plans to start his campaign for job as the second lefty in the pen were slowed on Sunday.  De La Rosa is coming off an elbow injury from last season and should begin throwing soon - yesterday's rest was just a precaution.
  • Jorge Posada was asked about CC Sabathia on Sunday, to which he replied: "He has an arm like David Wells."  Posada went on to say that CC could pitch for 50 more years and that his arm seemed problem free.  Great news to start Spring Training for the big Ace.
  • Yankees fans already miss Johnny Damon, and the next 24 hours won't be much easier.  The Tigers and Damon formalized their one year, $8MM deal and Johnny will be introduced as a Tiger today at 2pm during a press conference.
  • Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain both pitched on Sunday under the watchful eyes of just about everyone in camp.  Both pitchers threw curveballs as part of the session (this was their second session, so the "fastball/changeup" restriction was lifted).  As it is still very early, there is no news on who may be the frontrunner for the 5th starter spot - I'm putting my money on Phil Hughes, though.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes that pressure will still be a problem for Javier Vazquez in 2010, even though he will not be required to carry as much of a load as he did during his first Yankees tour.
