Randy Winn signs 1 year deal with Yankees
The Yankees have reached an agreement with 35 year old switch hitting OF Randy Winn, much more to come from this as it developed. The story was broken by Joel Sherman.
Apparently, the deal will be a one year deal for $2MM. Winn is a switch hitter, but only had 125 plate appearances against lefties last year (in which he went: .158 BA: .184 OBP; 19H; 0HR; 8 RBI - yikes). Overall in 2009, he was:
.262 BA; .318 OBP; .353 SLG with only 2 HR; 51 RBI; 16 S
Those were pretty bad numbers for Winn as he is a .282 career hitter. His fielding, however, is a little more uplifting as he didn't make an error last year. His speed also is sure to translate well to the vast amount of space in LF at the Stadium.
His durability is another thing to feel good about as he has played at least 149 games every season since 2002. Winn should be a pretty good pick up considering he did come for pretty cheap and with a short term deal. Expect him to play around 140 games and split the rest of the time with Gardner. He will likely bat 9th to start the season, which, if you think about it, makes him one of the more impressive and experienced hitters to hit out of the 9 hole in the game. What do you guys think of the move? Vote below.
